Balfour Beatty is a long-time All Star Signs client. In the past, the company asked us to fabricate digitally-printed vinyl door graphics for a project the firm had. In addition, we assisted the firm with COVID-19 safety signs. This time, the client asked us to work on their building and do channel letters on a cloud background in San Diego, CA.
Illuminated Channel Letters Mark the Company’s New Building
Having recently moved, Balfour Beatty had two separate projects. The first one had us going to the company’s old location and removing the existing building sign. Our technicians broke down the style elements and disposed of them properly.
The second project involved a new building sign that would be seen from the freeway and the parking lots around the area. There was a challenge that the blue facings did not light up great. We fixed this problem with the incorporation of blue color in the form of a cloud.
Our specialists manufactured internally illuminated channel letters that are 36″ tall. A blue cloud background is 44″ tall. The entire sign spans 24′ -10″. The returns are five inches deep and painted blue. This hue matches the background. The installation involved a raceway that we mounted to a slight overhang, which gives the lettering the illusion of floating just above the building’s facade.
The Difference Between a Cloud Background and Cloud Signs
There is a difference between the cloud background we devised for this client and cloud signs that we might construct for other businesses. The background surrounds the shapes of the letters and carries the color palette of the returns. It boosts the visibility of color nuances that might otherwise get lost.
Cloud letters, on the other hand, are types of channel letters that are not separated. Rather than having the individual style elements to mount, the letters are connected and display a thicker outline to make the differentiation easily visible. From there, we treat them just like other channel letters for the installation.
Other Uses for Cloud Backgrounds
Some clients have requested a cloud background when the colors of the channel letters and the tone of the wall are too similar. Rather than compromising on the brand representation on the building, the client might ask us to create a decorative cloud background that displays in a matching color, even though it contrasts nicely with the letters. In this case, we typically try to incorporate another tone from the corporate palette.
