On March 1st of this year, the California Equal Restroom Access Act (ERAA) went into effect. This law requires single-occupancy restrooms to have signage indicating that they are gender neutral. This means that if you do not have the required gender neutral ADA restroom signs in Escondido CA, you are leaving your organization open to lawsuits. If you would like to avoid legal troubles, check out the All Star Signs guide to the new regulations.
Which Bathrooms Are Covered by the ERAA?
If you manage a place of public accommodation, business, or a government building, the ERAA applies to all of your single-occupancy toilets. In fact, the act specifically defines “single-occupancy” as a “toilet facility with no more than one water closet and one urinal with a locking mechanism controlled by the user.”
What Is Required by the ERAA?
Basically, you are required by the ERAA to label all of your single-occupancy bathrooms with gender-neutral signs. These signs must be compliant with Title 24 of the California Code of Regulations. Thus, each gender-neutral lavatory must have at least a geometric sign and a designated tactile sign. For instance, restrooms must be identified with signs with raised letters along with duplicative Braille.
Under Title 24, the signs are subject to very specific rules. Organizations should be aware that the Braille and raised letters must be gender-neutral, even though you are not required to have specific wording. For example, the sign can say “Unisex Toilet,” “Restroom,” “Gender-Neutral Restroom,” or “All-Gender Restroom.”
Other Aspects of the ERAA Worth Noting
The pictograms on gender-neutral bathroom signs are not governed by the regulations. However, we offer an array of signs to fit your needs. Occasionally, there are new versions of the ideal pictograms for these markers. We provide some of the most popular solutions, such as
- Pictograms that exhibit one man, one woman, and a figure that is half man and half woman
- Pictograms that feature one woman and one man
- Pictograms that include one of the above along with a wheelchair figure
In addition to complying with the ERAA, our all-gender restroom signs also comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Each of the signs features Grade-2 Braille and raised text along with the pictograms. The markers are also non-glare with eased corners and a matte acrylic finish.
Get the Most out of Your Signs with Customization
As you get wrapped up in trying to comply with the Equal Restroom Access Act, you may lose sight of one of the most important advantages to signage: the ability to boost your brand awareness. Just because there is a whole slew of rules you must follow with your signage, it does not mean that style has to go out the window.
At All Star Signs, we are skilled at following the rule of law while incorporating your company colors, fonts, and logo. This will also lend a level of authority to your markers.
