What Is a Sign Router?
When we are giving tours of our workshop, we are often asked, “What is a sign router?” When you are working with a hard piece of material, such as plastic or wood, and you want to hollow out an area, a sign router is the way to go. The original form of the router was a hand tool, but these days, you are much more likely to find the less labor intensive electric motor driven power tool. The router works by spinning a bit at high speeds to trim, shape, and cut a material.
So, what does a sign router do? Just about everything. It has been described as the most versatile tool in the world. Sign routers can be used for the cutting and shaping of just about every type of wood, foam, plastic, PVC, acrylic, aluminum, and other materials. For more complex jobs, we use custom templates, jigs, and base plates in conjunction with the router.
What Makes the Gerber Sabre Router Great?
Gerber Sabre routers are perfectly suited for woodworking and dimensional sign making applications. Sabre routing systems provide high speed graphic design and letter routing as well as ease of use, dependability, minimal maintenance, and flexibility
. With the Gerber Sabre, we have been able to decrease the amount of lead time we need for our clients’ jobs along with increase the capacity of what we can produce.
The Gerber Sabre is mounted to a table, and we simply program the design we want created from the material, insert the right routing bit, and it gets down to work routing the sign. A lot of what the router can do depends upon the bit. Fortunately, Gerber supplies a full line of bits for engraving, routing, ADA applications, and custom work.
Some of the top features and benefits to the Gerber Sabre router are
- Easy to use interface
- To ensure a clean working surface, the router collects debris and maintains the material’s flatness
- Precision routing for small shapes
- Routs seamless signs of unlimited length from a continuous sheet
- Works with an array of file formats
- Uses clamps, a vacuum, or both to hold material to the table
- Without cutting the table, it can rout to the table’s surface
- And much more
